Question:

Hello, I was wondering if someone could help me get the information we need to form a Market the correct way.

We have been established for three years as the Market. The person who started the Market registered the Market as an LLC in her name. She later quit and I took over, we had an umbrella organization for two years that over seen out money and created a checking account using their EIN number. This year they asked that the Market branch out to be on their own.
So we have the Market as an LLC in the founder's name, the checking account under my social security number, and do not have the market set up as a 5013C or any sort of organization.
Are you able to help us or do you have someone you can refer us to?

Hi, I strongly suggest you read The New Farmers’ Market by Vance Corman (who happened to be our keynote speaker this past year).  You can find it on Amazon at https://smile.amazon.com/New-Farmers-Market-Farm-Fresh-Communities/dp/096328147X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1496675979&sr=8-1&keywords=the+new+farmers%27+market  This is an updated version of the book that my business partner and I used when we planned and designed our market in 2006-2007.  It has really been our primary reference since we began.

There are lots of questions and issues that need to be thoroughly  thought out and considered and this book is a GREAT way to help you work out those issues.  Initial steps might be to ask the original founder to transfer ownership of the LLC to you and for you to get an EIN for the market from the IRS and replace your social security number with the EIN on the checking account.  Then at least all the paperwork is in order.  Other issues like 501(c)(3) are much to involved to discuss with email.  The book will be quite helpful with that issue as well as many others.

Question:

Good morning, I am writing to see if there is a way to know which farm markets accept the EBT cards?  I have looked on line, but only find resources for the farm markets themselves.  Is there a list I can print off to give people interested in using there card to purchase fresh from the markets?

Answer:

I think your best bet would be to connect with Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services.  Each year they send a letter to all SNAP recipients with a listing of markets in their area.  They should be able to give you the list at least for your local counties.
