Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Resources


While, everyone has a role in ensuring safe food from field to fork, NSAC writes that the FDA’s new proposed rules as written in 2013 will unfairly burden family farmers, target sustainable and organic farming, and reduce the availability of fresh, local food in our communities. The regulations are part of the implementation of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) passed by Congress in 2010, and they set new standards for produce farms and new requirements for food facilities – including farms – that handle or process food for human consumption.

On December 19, 2013, FDA announced that it would propose revised rule language for key provisions of the two proposed rules affecting farmers and would publish revised language in early summer 2014. This decision was based on public input that led FDA to believe that significant changes would be needed in key provisions of the proposed rule on produce safety and the proposed rule on preventive controls for human food. National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition has extensive ongoing resources on the implications of the new proposed rules for small scale farmers. The pubilc comment period ended in November of 2013 and rules are yet to be finalized as of spring 2014. Visit NSAC's page for the latest.
